Kaohsiung City under extreme heavy rain alert! 119 mudslides, 3 major collapse zones at red alert

Kaohsiung City is facing a severe heavy rain alert as intense downpours, influenced by a tropical depression and a strong southwest monsoon, have inundated the region. The maximum 24-hour accumulated rainfall has reached a staggering 567 millimeters, prompting widespread warnings.

The Municipal Government has issued 119 red alerts for potential debris flows along unstable stream banks and three red alerts for large-scale collapse zones in mountainous areas. An additional two areas are under a yellow alert for collapses. These alerts cover 13 districts and 44 villages, with the Gushan District's Taoyuan Village unusually experiencing three red alerts for debris flows.

In response to the extreme weather, the city government has evacuated 2,647 residents. The Meteorological Administration continues to issue heavy rain advisories, warning of localized torrential to extremely heavy rain and lightning strikes through Tuesday morning. The Water Resources Bureau has cautioned residents in mountain areas to beware of landslides, falling rocks, debris flows, and rising river levels, advising against any activities in these regions. Low-lying areas are also at high risk of flooding.

The persistent rainfall has saturated the ground, increasing the risk of geological hazards. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to stay informed and follow safety guidelines.
