Kaohsiung Road Collapses, Creating 5-Meter Sinkhole; Excavator Trapped

A significant sinkhole, measuring about 5 meters wide, abruptly opened on Guangxi Road in Kaohsiung's Cianjhen District early Tuesday morning. The road surface, described as fragmented asphalt, initially developed a smaller hole around 2:00 AM. Residents and police placed warning cones and flashing lights to alert drivers.

However, the situation worsened by 8:24 AM as the road continued to collapse under the persistent rainfall. Repair crews from the city's Public Works and Water Resources departments arrived on the scene. While an excavator was attempting to work on the initial hole, a secondary pit unexpectedly opened beneath it, causing the heavy machinery to tilt at a 45-degree angle.

Police have cordoned off the area and are managing traffic diversions to ensure public safety. The incident highlights the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall, which can exacerbate underlying issues in road foundations. Repair work is ongoing as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and the cause of the collapse.
