Kaohsiung Intersection Tech Enforcement: AI Identifies One Reason, Saving Thousands of Wallets

Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence in traffic enforcement to ensure fairness and efficiency. The city's traffic police have introduced an AI image recognition system at intersections equipped with technology enforcement. This advanced system is designed to automatically identify and filter out vehicles that commit traffic violations while making way for emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks.

The initiative aims to enhance the accuracy of traffic enforcement and reduce the burden of unnecessary fines and appeals on citizens. By analyzing real-time traffic dynamics and vehicle behavior, the AI system can distinguish between genuine violations and those made out of necessity to allow emergency services passage. This technology helps prevent drivers from being penalized for actions taken to clear a path for life-saving vehicles.

Initially piloted at two intersections near major hospitals in late 2025, the AI system has since been expanded to 107 intersections across Kaohsiung. As of July 2026, the system has proactively identified and excluded 2,816 cases where vehicles were making way for emergency services. The Kaohsiung City Police Department urges the public to always yield to the sound of sirens, emphasizing the importance of keeping these life-saving routes clear.
