Kaohsiung Invests NT$27 Million to Enhance Gushan 3rd Road Flood Control Capacity

Kaohsiung City's Water Resources Bureau has completed a NT$27 million project to bolster flood control measures in the Gushan District. The initiative focused on upgrading the Gushan 3rd Road pumping station by installing two new pumping units, significantly enhancing its capacity to manage heavy rainfall and prevent waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

The Gushan 3rd Road area, particularly the Housheng, Zhengde, and Pinghe neighborhoods, has historically suffered from severe flooding during typhoons and torrential downpours. Its proximity to Shai Mountain and its low-lying topography, coupled with tidal influences from the Love River, exacerbates the problem.

To address these recurring issues, the Water Resources Bureau has implemented several flood control projects since 2016, including the Gushan Canal renovation and the construction of the Shai Mountain detention basin. These efforts have already led to a substantial reduction in the frequency and extent of flooding in recent years.

The latest project, funded by a central government subsidy from the Ministry of the Interior's National Land Management Administration, involved adding two 2.5 CMS (cubic meters per second) pumping units. This brings the pumping station's total capacity to the designed target of 10 CMS. Additionally, two rotary trash screens were installed to remove debris from the culverts during heavy rainfall, ensuring the stable operation of the pumps. The new pumping units work in conjunction with existing detention basins and tide gates to create a more comprehensive flood defense system, safeguarding residents' lives and property.
