Kathmandu Valley Mayors to meet PM over waste management and other issues

The Kathmandu Valley Mayors’ Forum is preparing to meet Prime Minister Balen Shah to present a series of critical issues concerning the region's governance and infrastructure. A key focus of the upcoming meeting will be the persistent challenges of waste management within the valley.

According to Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan, who chairs the forum, the mayors intend to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister as soon as possible. Beyond waste management, the forum plans to bring attention to other vital concerns, including the collection of streetlight charges, the allocation of land-use rights for local governments, and securing necessary land for waste management facilities.

The forum also plans to raise issues regarding the conduct of lawmaker Ashika Tamang, who allegedly behaved inappropriately towards forum office-bearers and members during a waste management meeting on August 21. This incident highlights potential friction between different levels of government and elected officials.

Furthermore, the mayors will discuss the implementation of a previous agreement between the government and Nep Waste for waste management in the Kathmandu Valley, an agreement made when Prime Minister Shah himself was the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The forum will consider whether this agreement should be terminated to allow for new, potentially more effective, waste management solutions. The forum concluded that effective waste management is a shared responsibility across all three tiers of government in Nepal.
