Katja Šeruga Leaves N1 Slovenia

Katja Šeruga has left her position as editor-in-chief of N1 Slovenia after more than five years leading the portal’s newsroom. She reached a mutual agreement with Adria News Network, the outlet said.

“It was an honor to lead the newsroom from its beginning and to work with such a talented and dedicated team,” Šeruga wrote. She had been removed as the company’s director two weeks earlier but remained as the portal’s editor until her latest departure.

The change follows the takeover of Adria News Network by international investment company Alpak Capital. ANN links 14 news organizations in Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia, including N1 Slovenia.

The Slovenian Journalists’ Association has asked the Slovenian Competition Protection Agency to open a media-concentration assessment concerning the takeover of ANN and N1 Slovenia. The association said such a review must consider not only market issues but also the effect on editorial independence.

Brent Sadler, ANN’s executive director for news, said in a message to the newsroom that N1 Slovenia would continue operating according to its editorial principles and remain committed to accurate, independent and responsible journalism.
