Katowice Airport begins arrivals terminal expansion

Katowice Airport is undergoing a significant expansion of its arrivals terminal, set to increase its surface area from 6,900 to over 10,400 square meters and its length from 156 to 235 meters. The project aims to enhance passenger experience and boost the airport's capacity.

The arrivals hall will feature an increased number of baggage carousels, rising from three to five. Notably, one carousel will be adapted for wide-body aircraft, capable of accommodating up to 300 passengers. A new border control zone is also being constructed from scratch, expanding the number of control points to 16, with 10 designated for automated passport control (ABC gates). The installation of these gates is being funded by a government grant.

The investment, valued at 34.7 million PLN net and carried out by Budimex, is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, in time for the summer holiday season. Artur Tomasik, president of the Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze which manages the airport, stated that the expansion is a response to growing passenger traffic and aims to improve service quality and throughput.

In connection with the growing passenger traffic, we are implementing investments aimed at improving service quality and increasing infrastructure throughput.

Beyond the terminal expansion, the airport is also upgrading its security checks. An agreement has been signed for four C3 standard security control lines. Starting next summer, passengers will no longer need to remove electronics from their carry-on baggage, and the allowable capacity for liquids will increase to two liters per container.

This terminal expansion is part of Katowice Airport's largest-ever infrastructure development program, spanning 2024-2032 with a total value of approximately 1.5 billion PLN. The program's key initiative is the construction of a main passenger terminal with associated infrastructure, including a new road system, a transit center, and a connection to the train station. The airport anticipates handling a record 7.9 million passengers in 2026.

The expansion of terminal C is not all. We have signed an agreement for the supply of four security control lines in the C3 standard. From next year's holidays, passengers will not have to remove electronics from their hand luggage, and the permissible capacity of a single container with liquid will increase to two liters.
