Katseye wins AMA 2026 New Artist award, cites BTS as inspiration

K-pop group Katseye achieved a significant milestone, clinching the New Artist of the Year award at the American Music Awards 2026. The win marks a historic moment, as Katseye becomes the first girl group to secure this honor since the category's introduction in 2004.

During their acceptance speech, the group expressed profound gratitude to the global sensation BTS. "We want to give a special shout-out to BTS tonight for inspiring us to represent our culture on a global scale," shared member Sophia Laforteza, highlighting the influence of the veteran group on their artistic journey. Katseye's victory saw them triumph over fellow nominees including Leon Thomas, Olivia Dean, Alex Warren, Ella Langley, and sombr.

The group, an international ensemble based in Los Angeles, was formed through a collaboration between HYBE and Geffen Records. They first gained international recognition after winning the 2023 reality competition series "The Debut: Dream Academy." Katseye's mission, as articulated by member Lara Raj, is to "celebrate diversity and represent the cultures and communities of each member." This commitment to diversity was evident throughout their performance of their latest single, "Pinky Up," which reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, their highest chart achievement to date.

In addition to their New Artist of the Year award, Katseye was nominated for Best Music Video for "Gnarly" and Breakthrough Pop Artist. Although only five members were present at the ceremony due to Manon Bannerman's hiatus, the group's energy and impact were palpable.
