Kazakhstan achieves historic fencing world championship victory

Kazakhstan has achieved a historic victory, winning the Fencing World Championship for the first time in the sport's history. The Kazakh team secured the title by defeating Ukraine 45-40 in a closely contested final held in Hong Kong.

The final match saw both teams testing each other, with initial bouts even and penalties issued for passivity. Kazakhstan established a slight two-point lead in the first third of the match. A key moment occurred when Vadim Sharlaimov sustained a minor leg injury and took a medical timeout. Despite the injury, he returned and managed an impressive scoring run of +4. The Ukrainian team managed to narrow the gap to within two touches heading into the final bouts.

Due to his earlier injury, Sharlaimov was replaced in his final bout by Ruslan Kurbanov, the country's only individual World Championship medalist. Kazakhstan held a five-touch lead entering the decisive showdown, with 19-year-old Kirill Prokhorov securing the victory. The Kazakh national team entered the tournament ranked 5th in the world, making their championship win both unexpected and sensational.

Kazakhstan's path to gold included victories over Finland, Uzbekistan, Denmark, and Egypt. Their semifinal match against Egypt was hard-fought, and their quarterfinal match against Uzbekistan required erasing a deficit to clinch a narrow one-touch victory. Previously, the national team's best performance at the Fencing World Championships was a bronze medal won in Georgia last year. The team's head coach for this championship was Oleksandr Horbachuk, a Ukrainian specialist.
