Kazakhstan President Urges Putin to Freeze Ukraine War

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider freezing the conflict in Ukraine, citing signals received from the U.S. and Europe.

Tokayev informed Putin about these concerns during their meeting in Alaska. He expressed that while Kazakhstan respects the Ukrainian people, the nature of the conflict remains unclear to many, unlike historical disputes such as the one between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Tokayev proposed reviving the "Istanbul formula 2.0," which saw significant progress in 2022, and relying on security guarantees from major powers, including Russia, to move towards peace.

In response, Putin assured Tokayev that he would be informed about the situation regarding Ukraine. Tokayev also reaffirmed Kazakhstan's unwavering stance towards Russia, describing it as a great power with which Kazakhstan is committed to strategic cooperation and allied relations, regardless of difficulties. He stated that the current forum served as confirmation of this commitment.
