KBS Lawyer Appointment Sparks Conflict of Interest Row; Resignation Accepted

A controversy has erupted over the appointment of a daughter of a Democratic Party lawmaker as a legal advisor to Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), a public broadcaster. The lawyer, daughter of Song Ki-heon, chairman of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, was among six new advisors appointed to provide legal counsel on KBS's media reports.

The appointment drew immediate criticism for a potential conflict of interest, as the committee chaired by Song oversees KBS and related legislation. KBS stated that it was unaware of the familial relationship, claiming that the appointments were based on individual resumes and that they did not investigate family ties. However, critics argue that it is difficult to avoid accusations of conflict of interest when a public institution, subject to parliamentary oversight, provides work to the child of a committee chairman.

The KBS branch of the Journalists Association of Korea also criticized the appointment, stating that "concerns of conflict of interest are unavoidable." They questioned the impartiality of legal advice if the lawyer were to provide counsel on KBS news reports, especially those concerning her father's committee or conflict of interest issues. The association further raised concerns that the advisory lawyer positions have devolved into a means for the president to manage personal connections, citing instances where former advisors allegedly attributed their appointments to personal relationships with the president.

In response to the mounting criticism, KBS accepted the lawyer's resignation. The broadcaster maintained that the decision was the lawyer's own. The KBS Journalists Association is demanding transparency, calling for the disclosure of the criteria and basis for selecting advisory lawyers and urging an investigation into the matter.
