Kyung Hee University Overhauls Undergraduate Scholarships for 2026 Academic Year

Kyung Hee University is implementing a significant overhaul of its undergraduate scholarship system, set to take effect in the 2026 academic year. The reform aims to unify the scholarship operating systems previously divided between its Seoul and International campuses. A key focus is the substantial expansion of "competency enhancement scholarships" designed to support students' proactive growth.

The university conducted a survey in November 2025 among 274 undergraduate students, revealing that 87% agreed with expanding scholarship programs beyond mere tuition reduction to focus on future competency development. Notably, high demand was expressed for scholarships linked to majors and career paths (65%) and those reflecting the specific characteristics of different colleges and departments (83%).

A major change involves integrating the performance-based scholarship systems of both campuses. The "Mosaic Scholarship" from the Seoul campus and the "Mileage Scholarship" from the International campus will be unified under the "Convergence Talent Scholarship." This new scholarship will support students' competency development through achievements like winning contests or obtaining certifications. It also introduces "college-specific specialization items" tailored to the career goals of each college.

Additionally, successful scholarship programs from each campus will be expanded to the other. The Seoul campus's "Kyung Hee Dream Challenge Scholarship" (supporting challenge-based projects) and "Jump Scholarship" (aiding academic improvement through professor consultations) will be introduced at the International campus. The International campus's departmental scholarship system will be reorganized as the "College Specialization Scholarship" for the Seoul campus. The funding for the "Startup Scholarship," which supports entrepreneurial capabilities, has also been increased.

The university adjusted its structure, streamlining items that overlapped with national scholarships while maintaining full tuition coverage for low-income students. Approximately 610 million won (about $440,000 USD) in funds has been reallocated to competency enhancement and performance-based scholarships. The application and receiving process for scholarships will also be simplified. Starting the second semester of the 2026 academic year, the "Academic Excellence Scholarship" will replace the "Academic Achievement Scholarship," requiring no separate application and selecting students based on college criteria. The "Woojung Scholarship," linked to Type 1 national scholarships, will see its recipient pool expand by about 10% to 11,270 students in the first semester of the 2026 academic year, up from 10,253 in the first semester of 2024.
