Kebbi Assembly elects Maikasuwa-Dangoje speaker after predecessor’s death

Lawmakers in the Kebbi State House of Assembly have elected Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, the representative for Sakaba Constituency, as the new Speaker. This decision fills the leadership vacuum created by the recent death of the former Speaker, Mohammed Usman-Zuru.

Maikasuwa-Dangoje secured the position through a unanimous endorsement during a plenary session held at the Assembly Complex in Birnin Kebbi. The election process was overseen by the Clerk of the House, Sulaiman Shamaki, who cited Section 92(1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which empowers state assembly members to elect their Speaker.

Hon. Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje has spent over a decade in this Assembly and has served in various leadership capacities. His experience, commitment and understanding of legislative processes make him eminently qualified to lead this House at this critical time.

The nomination for Maikasuwa-Dangoje was put forward by Adamu Birnin-Yauri, the member representing Ngaski Constituency, and seconded by Lawal Haruna of Fakai Constituency. Birnin-Yauri described the newly elected Speaker as a seasoned legislator with over a decade of experience in the Assembly, having served in various leadership capacities. He emphasized Maikasuwa-Dangoje's qualifications to lead the House during this critical period.

Following the unanimous approval, the Clerk administered the oath of office. In his acceptance speech, Maikasuwa-Dangoje expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their confidence. He pledged to offer inclusive, transparent, and purposeful leadership, promising to foster unity among lawmakers and improve the Assembly's legislative and oversight functions. He stated the intention to continue enacting people-oriented laws and collaborating with other government arms for good governance and development in Kebbi State.

The election comes nearly two months after the passing of Mohammed Usman-Zuru on April 7, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, where he was receiving medical treatment. The late Speaker was recognized for his role in fostering cordial relations between the legislature and the executive.
