Kelantan demands respect for petroleum, gas rights

Kelantan state is demanding that the federal government honor its rights concerning petroleum and gas resources, drawing parallels to the respect shown for the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area agreement. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr. Mohamed Fadzli Hassan stated that the state, Petronas, and the federal government signed agreements in 1974 and 1975 that clearly define Kelantan's rights.

"It is a very clear agreement and only two pages long," Hassan said during a Kelantan State Legislative Assembly session. "Even Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah once said it could be understood by a fourth-grader, that it is Kelantan's right."

Hassan urged federal lawmakers to "whisper to the Center" about the state's petroleum rights. The state government is actively pursuing diplomatic channels with the federal government to ensure Kelantan is recognized as a stakeholder in the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area, which is set to enter a crucial phase in 2028.

The deputy chief minister emphasized the clarity of the original agreements, suggesting they were straightforward and easily understandable. The state's push highlights ongoing efforts to secure its resource rights and ensure its involvement in significant regional development projects.
