Kemenhaj Threatens to Close Travel Agencies Abandoning Pilgrims

Indonesia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (Kemenhaj) has issued a stern warning against umrah travel organizers who abandon pilgrims, threatening severe penalties including license revocation and criminal prosecution. The ministry stated it has received numerous reports of travel agents leaving pilgrims stranded in Saudi Arabia, failing to provide return tickets or providing misleading information.

Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, emphasized that even a single violation could lead to an immediate closure of the travel agent's permit. He stressed that legal action would extend to individuals, Hajj and Umrah Guidance Groups (KBIHU), and any other parties involved in fraudulent practices, particularly concerning fake 'badal' (proxy) services that have cost pilgrims billions of rupiah.

I have received many reports of umrah travel agents abandoning their pilgrims with various arguments, both in Jeddah and Mecca. Their tickets were not bought and the pilgrims were lied to. We will act more decisively.

Simanjuntak stated that these firm measures aim to deter fraudulent activities and cleanse the hajj and umrah organizing sector of those who exploit public trust. He urged the public to exercise due diligence when selecting umrah travel agents, ensuring they possess official permits, guarantee departure, and offer accountable services to avoid falling victim to fraud.
