Kevin Navas wins second stage as Guamá keeps Vuelta de Ecuador lead

Kevin Navas of Best PC Ecuador won the second stage of the 42nd Vuelta de Ecuador on Tuesday, while his teammate Byron Guamá retained the overall lead.

Navas completed the 129.68-kilometer circuit in Riobamba in 2 hours, 58 minutes and 11 seconds. Ecuadorian Juan Carlos Córdoba of Espectro Cycling finished second, and Guamá took third.

Guamá, who won the first stage, leads teammate Héctor Álvarez by eight seconds and Santiago Montenegro of Best PC Ecuador by 10 seconds. He also remains at the top of the mountains classification. Alejandro Pita of J&J Toscana leads the sprint classification, Álvarez remains the best young rider, and Franklin Revelo of Águila Team was named the day’s most combative rider.

Teams from Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela are also competing. Wednesday’s third stage will begin at the historic Urbina railway station in Chimborazo province and cover 141.37 kilometers to the El Boliche National Recreation Area, on the slopes of the Cotopaxi volcano.
