Key Witness in Hernández Case Faces Money Laundering Trial in Honduras

Alexander Ardón, a confessed drug trafficker and pivotal witness in the U.S. case against former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, is now facing a money laundering trial in Honduras. Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in prison in the U.S. for drug trafficking charges.

Ardón's testimony was crucial in the U.S. trial, where he stated that the Sinaloa Cartel contributed $1 million to fund Hernández's 2013 presidential campaign. Ardón himself pleaded guilty to drug-related offenses in a U.S. court in January 2025 and was sentenced to time served, meaning he will not spend additional days in jail. He was deported to Honduras in April 2025 to face charges there.

The trial, which commenced Wednesday in a Tegucigalpa court, sees Ardón accused alongside his fugitive brother, Hugo Alfredo Ardón. The prosecution alleges they failed to justify over 50 million lempiras (approximately $1.8 million). Investigations suggest the Ardón brothers led a drug trafficking and money laundering operation since 2003, using illicit profits to acquire valuable properties, luxury vehicles, and ranches.

Ardón, a former mayor of El Paraíso in Copán, has also been linked by authorities to Mexican drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán Loera and Guatemalan Mario Ponce, with whom they allegedly formed criminal alliances. Honduran authorities also identify Alexander Ardón as the leader of the 'AA' cartel and allegedly responsible for 56 murders. Due to security concerns, Ardón is attending the trial via videoconference.
