Kia's accessible EV enables family's first trip in 23 years

A family embarked on their first trip in 23 years, thanks to Kia's innovative PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle), a specially designed electric vehicle that allowed a patient with long-term medical equipment to travel.

Kim On-yu, who has lived in a hospital for 23 years and relies on respiratory support, experienced a journey to the sea, a trip previously limited by the constraints of medical equipment. The PV5 WAV, unveiled by Hyundai Motor Group, features a V2L (Vehicle to Load) function that powers medical devices like oxygen generators even while the vehicle is in motion. Unlike traditional methods where wheelchairs access cargo areas from the road, the PV5 WAV offers a safer side-entry system via a sliding door, allowing for boarding from the sidewalk. Its integrated ramp system is easily deployable, supporting up to 300kg, accommodating electric wheelchairs.

A video titled 'The Moving Room,' showcasing Kim's journey, has achieved over 10.58 million views in three weeks. The video highlights Kim's desire to "fall into the sea" and "go further, see more." Comments on the video reveal a strong public interest in the PV5 WAV's potential applications, with analysis showing 34.3% of suggestions related to medical and caregiving fields, followed by education, culture, travel, and even pet care and emergency response.

Kim expressed gratitude for the public's support and hope that the experience inspires others. "I gained the courage to do this thanks to this trip, and I hope more people can travel freely and have new experiences," Kim stated, as relayed by Hyundai. This journey was facilitated through Kia's 'Green Journey' social contribution program, which has supported over 110,000 individuals with mobility challenges since 2012.
