KMT Legislator Vows to Buy All Mooncakes to Quash Controversy

A controversy erupted after a Kuomintang (KMT) legislator proposed cutting NT$30 million from the presidential office's discretionary fund. This action jeopardized a planned purchase of 15,000 boxes of mooncakes from sheltered workshops, intended to support vulnerable workers during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The proposal by legislator Weng Hsiao-ling to eliminate the discretionary fund, which included the mooncake purchase, ignited public backlash. Critics argued that the move unfairly targeted and harmed the livelihoods of individuals employed by these workshops.

In response to the public outcry, KMT Chairwoman Sylvia Chang announced that she would personally purchase all 15,000 boxes of mooncakes. This decision aims to mitigate the negative impact on the sheltered workshops and quell the controversy.

Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen also commented on the situation, indicating further engagement or support related to the issue. The incident highlights the sensitive balance between fiscal prudence and social welfare considerations, particularly concerning support for marginalized communities.
