Kokoomus Party Board Stands Behind PM Orpo Amid Garden Helsinki Scandal

The executive board of Finland's Kokoomus party has publicly reaffirmed its support for Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the Garden Helsinki project. An interview with eight of the party's 16 executive board members revealed a consensus: their confidence in Orpo remains unshaken, and his position is not perceived as being under threat.

I have one hundred percent trust in Orpo. This is summer theater from the opposition, which has nothing else to do.

However, a common thread in the interviews is the acknowledgment that communication surrounding the Garden Helsinki project could have been more effective. Jari Andersson, chairman of Pirkanmaa Kokoomus, stated that while the party board received sufficient clarification on the matter, the handling of the issue could have been improved. He described Orpo's position as "reasonably stable" but noted that the controversy adds "slippery surfaces" as the matter progresses through parliament.

The matter has grown larger than it really needs to be due to these communication reasons. Trust from the entire party board still exists. There will be no problems from our own ranks with the current information.

Despite a recent dip in Kokoomus's support in the HS-gallup, party board members Mika Järvinen and Nuutti Metsämäki echoed the sentiment of strong support for Orpo. Järvinen dismissed the parliamentary session as "summer theater from the opposition," while Metsämäki, chairman of the Kokoomus Students, attributed the controversy's escalation primarily to communication issues and its emergence during the summer break. Both emphasized that the party board's trust in Orpo remains intact.

If this had happened during the winter season, the vote of confidence would have been processed and the matter moved forward. Perhaps the controversy would have dissipated earlier if parliament had been convened sooner. This is, of course, hindsight.

Regional chairmen Jyri Saastamoinen and Aulikki Sihvonen also offered similar assessments. Saastamoinen suggested that the timing of the parliamentary session, called for Tuesday, might have been better handled if it had occurred during the winter. Sihvonen agreed that the parliamentary session was appropriate given the opposition's demands but questioned the necessity of further investigation. Kansanedustajat Oskari Valtola and Pauli Aalto-Setälä, along with Jesse Luhtala, chairman of Pohjanmaa Kokoomus, also reiterated their full support for Orpo as party leader and prime minister, with Luhtala noting that while communication could always be improved, the overall handling of the situation was acceptable.

It is quite right that parliament is convened. The opposition demanded the matter be investigated so strongly. I don't understand what needs to be investigated here, though.
