Korpatsch and Bondar to contest Hamburg Open final

Hamburg, Germany – German player Tamara Korpatsch and Hungarian Anna Bondar are set to face off in the final of the WTA 250 Hamburg Open on Sunday. Korpatsch, ranked 81st in the world, reached the final after her opponent, Egypt's Mayar Sherif, retired from their semifinal match due to a leg injury.

Sherif, ranked 107th, was trailing 6-1, 2-0 when she withdrew. Korpatsch, a native of Hamburg, had dominated the first set in just half an hour before Sherif's retirement. This marks Korpatsch's potential for a significant title, as she seeks her first singles title at the 250 level, having previously won doubles titles in Palermo and Lausanne.

In the other semifinal, Bondar, the world No. 97, battled for over three and a half hours to defeat Armenia's Elina Avanesyan, ranked 208th. Bondar won the tightly contested match with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, with two tie-breaks. Despite losing the match, Avanesyan put up a strong performance, taking one set from the Hungarian.

This will be the fifth professional meeting between Korpatsch and Bondar, with Korpatsch having won all previous four encounters, including three on clay courts.
