KPK Re-examines Gus Alex in Hajj Corruption Case; Officer Suspended

Ishfah Abidal Aziz, widely known as Gus Alex and a special staffer to Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, has been re-examined by investigators from Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) as part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption related to hajj quotas. Gus Alex arrived at the KPK's headquarters in South Jakarta on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, responding briefly to reporters that he was "healthy."

This marks Gus Alex's second interrogation by the KPK. He was previously questioned on June 17, 2026, where investigators delved into allegations of fund flows amounting to US$1 million, reportedly linked to the work processes of a special committee (Pansus) for the DPR's Hajj inquiry. The KPK's current focus is on further investigating these alleged fund movements, clarifying the roles of all involved parties, and determining the exact state losses incurred.

Alongside Gus Alex, the KPK also questioned Hilman Latief, the former Director-General for Hajj and Umrah Management at the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The KPK officially named Ishfah Abidal Aziz a suspect on January 8, 2026. The case centers on allegations of abuse of authority concerning the distribution of an additional 20,000 hajj quotas granted to Indonesia by the Saudi Arabian government. Investigators suspect irregularities in the process of allocating and distributing these quotas, which allegedly resulted in state losses and benefited certain parties.
