Kremlin and White House call Trump envoys' Moscow talks 'constructive and substantive'

The Kremlin and the White House called the Moscow talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump's representatives substantive, constructive and unusually frank. The meeting lasted three hours and 10 minutes, according to Putin aide Yuri Ushakov.

Ushakov said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived well prepared and presented several ideas for reaching a settlement. He added that the American negotiators had promised to consider Putin's assessments during meetings scheduled in Kyiv.

"The US representatives were thoroughly prepared for their trip to Moscow and formulated a number of considerations on ways to reach a settlement. Putin and Trump will maintain personal contact, while the work mediated by Witkoff and Kushner will also continue," Ushakov said.

The discussions went beyond Russia's war against Ukraine, Ushakov said, and included possible major projects between Russia and the United States. A White House representative told Reuters that the talks were substantive and that the next steps would be announced in the coming weeks.

The talks followed the envoys' arrival in Moscow on Sept. 5 and their meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's special envoy, over lunch before they went to the Kremlin. Russian media later reported that their plane left Russian airspace and landed in Rzeszów, Poland. The negotiators were expected in Kyiv on Sept. 6. The Kremlin had also announced a three-day halt to strikes on Kyiv, starting at midnight, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was willing to halt airstrikes on cities involved in the negotiating process.
