Kuala Terengganu Council Tightens Rules for Waste Contractors, Threatens Contract Termination

The Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) is implementing stricter oversight of its waste collection contractors, effective immediately, to ensure services are performed according to the established schedule. This intensified monitoring includes areas like Redang Island, where timely waste removal is crucial.

If the failure continues, MBKT will not hesitate to terminate the contractor's appointment to ensure the waste collection service is not affected.

Datuk Bandar Kuala Terengganu, Lizan Che Mat, announced that contractors failing to adhere to the collection schedule will face punitive actions. These measures include financial penalties through payment deductions. Che Mat stated that if non-compliance persists, MBKT will not hesitate to terminate the contracts to prevent disruptions in the essential waste collection service.

Currently, MBKT is focusing on a special operation to manage and remove an estimated 20 metric tons of waste from Redang Island. A barge was dispatched to the island to transport the remaining refuse to the Sungai Ikan Solid Waste Disposal Center. As of yesterday, approximately 13 metric tons had been collected, with the remaining 10 tons expected to be cleared by this evening.

Until now, almost 13 metric tons of waste have been collected out of an estimated total of 20 metric tons, while the remaining approximately 10 metric tons will be completed this afternoon (yesterday).

Che Mat emphasized that the council continues to monitor the cleaning work performed by the appointed contractors to effectively address the issue of accumulating garbage. The council's commitment is to ensure that the waste management services operate efficiently and meet the community's needs.
