Kuningan landfill fire continues for 12th day, smoke still visible

A significant fire at the waste disposal site (TPAS) in Ciniru Village, Kuningan Regency, West Java, Indonesia, continues to rage after 12 days, with plumes of smoke still visible across the affected area. The blaze, which began on August 12, 2026, has spread rapidly across more than five hectares of land, with over 90 percent now impacted.

Emergency response teams from the Kuningan Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) are engaged in continuous efforts to combat the fire. Their operations include both active firefighting and cooling measures aimed at preventing any remaining embers from reigniting.

Indra Bayu Permana, the head of the BPBD for Kuningan Regency, stated on Sunday, August 23, 2026, that efforts were concentrated on the central sector of the landfill. He assured the public that the fire has been localized within the TPAS boundaries and has not spread to nearby residential areas.

The prolonged duration of the fire highlights the challenges in controlling such incidents, particularly at large waste disposal sites. The ongoing smoke also raises concerns about air quality in the surrounding region.
