Kuwait approves historic 12-team Zain Premier League for 2026-27

The Kuwait Football Association (KFA) Board, led by Sheikh Ahmed Al-Yousef, has made a significant decision to expand the Zain Premier League to 12 teams. This historic change will be implemented starting from the 2026-27 season, marking a notable shift after years of the league operating with 10 clubs.

The expanded league will feature the 10 clubs that competed in the top flight last season, including prominent names like Kuwait Club, Al-Qadsia, and Al-Arabi. They will be joined by Al-Sulaibikhat and Al-Sahel, who earned their promotion as the First Division champion and runner-up, respectively.

Since taking leadership in October 2024 and subsequently being elected for a new four-year term, Sheikh Al-Yousef has focused on broadening participation in Kuwaiti football. His efforts have encouraged various entities to support domestic competitions, leading to the involvement of new teams in lower divisions as well. This expansion also means the First Division will now consist of eight teams.

This strategic expansion aligns with the KFA's broader objective to bring Kuwaiti football closer to Asian professional league standards and meet the requirements set by the Asian Football Confederation. The ultimate goal is to enhance the competitiveness of Kuwaiti clubs in continental competitions and improve the overall standard of domestic football, with positive repercussions expected for the national team.
