Kyiv drone expo hit by rare daytime Russian missile attack, casualties reported

Russia carried out one of its few daytime missile strikes on Kyiv on Friday, firing ten Iskander and Zircon ballistic missiles. Ukrainian media reported that the target was a military exhibition of unmanned systems held at a Kyiv airport. Unofficial reports from Ukrainian bloggers and media indicate that two of the ten missiles hit the event area, with at least ten people killed and around a hundred injured, though official casualty figures have not yet been confirmed.

The attack has drawn sharp criticism of the event organizers. According to Ukrainian sources, a poster detailing the exhibition's location and time was posted on social media days before the event. Ballistic attacks on Kyiv typically occur at night, making this daytime strike unusual. Anton Zemljanyi, a senior analyst at the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, offered three possible explanations for the timing.

A second possibility is a demonstration of force, a political message possibly linked to a recent visit by a U.S. delegation to Kyiv, or an effort to divert attention from Ukrainian attacks on targets within Russia. The third explanation is technical: the attack might have been planned for nighttime but was delayed until the morning due to technical issues.

Explosions were heard in Kyiv around 11:30 a.m. local time after authorities issued a warning about ballistic missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that six people were killed and dozens injured in the missile attack, with rescue operations ongoing. Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Air Force, commented that public events have long been prohibited within the armed forces due to security concerns and urged civilians to observe similar safety regulations when organizing public events.

The Prosecutor General's Office has launched an investigation into suspected war crimes under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Simultaneously, a separate criminal investigation has been opened into the possible negligent organization of the event. This inquiry aims to determine who made the decision to hold the event, who approved its location, time, and method, what security measures were in place, and whether the risks were properly assessed under martial law conditions.
