Kyiv shooting: SBU employee and military intelligence officer face suspicion

An employee of Ukraine’s Security Service and a military intelligence officer face criminal suspicions linked to a high-profile shooting in Kyiv.

Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the SBU employee is suspected under Article 365, Part 2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which concerns exceeding official powers. The military intelligence officer, serving with the Defence Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate, faces suspicion under Article 348 for attempting to kill a law enforcement officer.

Investigators have ordered a comprehensive examination to establish all the circumstances surrounding the use of firearms. It will assess the origin of shot traces and examine physical evidence collected at the scene. Kravchenko said the immediate priority is to establish the facts and check the actions and statements of everyone involved in the conflict.

The disappearance of Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, is being investigated in a separate case opened on Sept. 1. Authorities are working to establish what happened, identify people connected to the disappearance, determine their motives and trace Kaplunov’s movements.
