Kyrgyz and Kazakh Poets to Compete at World Nomad Games

The VI World Nomad Games, set to be held in Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 6, 2026, will host a significant cultural event: an international competition of Kyrgyz and Kazakh improvisational poets, known as akyns. Scheduled from September 2 to 4, the "aytysh" will unfold at the Kyrchyn jailoo in the picturesque Issyk-Kul region.

This gathering of akyns is designed to foster and reinforce the centuries-old spiritual and cultural connections between the Kyrgyz and Kazakh peoples. Organizers aim to popularize the art of improvisation, a vibrant tradition that showcases wit, poetic skill, and quick thinking, while simultaneously promoting national values among the younger generation.

Talented akyns from both Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are expected to participate, demonstrating their mastery of the spoken word, their resourcefulness, and their improvisational prowess to captivated audiences. The competition not only celebrates cultural heritage but also offers substantial rewards, with a total prize fund of 3 million Kyrgyz soms up for grabs.
