Kyrgyz Filmmaker Proposes SCO Fund for Auteur Cinema

Kyrgyz filmmaker Aktan Arym Kubat has called for greater attention to the development of auteur cinema and the establishment of a support mechanism for joint film projects among Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) countries. He made this proposal during a roundtable discussion on "Cinema of SCO Countries in the Modern Era: Integration, Co-production, Development Prospects."

Kubat stressed that film festivals should primarily serve as platforms for art, rather than focusing solely on commercial success. "A festival should primarily present cinema as an art form," he stated. "I would like to see the winning films of such festivals shown in all SCO countries. This would help audiences better understand each other's cinema."

He further highlighted the increasing commercialization of cinema, underscoring the critical need to support auteur films that reflect the cultural identity of various peoples. To facilitate this, Kubat suggested creating a pitching system and a special fund within SCO festivals to support international co-productions. "When we talk about joint film production, we need not only meetings but also real support mechanisms," he said. "It would be right to hold pitchings and create a fund that would help filmmakers from SCO countries realize joint projects."

He expressed regret over the disappearance of many major auteur film festivals in the region and emphasized the necessity of supporting such cultural platforms.
