Kyrgyzstan: 20-30 Children Need Stem Cell Transplants Annually, Procedure Now Available Locally

Kyrgyzstan faces an annual need for hematopoietic stem cell transplants for dozens of its citizens, highlighting a significant medical requirement within the country.

Every year, about 20-30 children need hematopoietic stem cell transplants.

Sultan Stambekov, head of the Pediatric Oncology Department at the National Center for Maternal and Child Welfare, stated that around 20 to 30 children require these transplants every year. Furthermore, approximately 90 adults also need the procedure annually, indicating a substantial demand across different age groups.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a critical medical treatment used to restore bone marrow function after it has been compromised by disease or intensive therapy. Previously, patients needing this procedure often had to travel abroad for treatment, incurring costs that could reach up to $100,000.

According to him, about 90 adults also need this procedure.

However, Stambekov noted a significant development: these life-saving transplants can now be performed within Kyrgyzstan. This advancement means that Kyrgyz patients no longer need to seek specialized care overseas, potentially saving them and the healthcare system substantial financial resources and reducing the logistical burdens associated with international medical travel.
