Kyrgyzstan imports 16.2 times more alcoholic beverages than it exports

Kyrgyzstan's trade in alcoholic beverages reveals a stark imbalance, with imports exceeding exports by more than 16 times in the first five months of the year. The country imported $14.83 million worth of alcohol, while exports only reached $913,000, resulting in a trade deficit of $13.917 million.

Strong spirits dominate the import market, accounting for $8.37 million of the total. Imports in this category surged by 58.8% compared to the same period last year. Russia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland are the primary sources of these imported spirits. Beer imports followed, totaling $5.035 million, with Russia, Kazakhstan, and Mexico as key suppliers. Grape wine imports reached $1.35 million, with France, Uzbekistan, and Lithuania leading the supply.

The surge in spending on strong alcohol is the main driver of increased import costs, despite a decline in beer and grape wine imports. This indicates a growing demand for higher-proof beverages within Kyrgyzstan.

On the export side, the picture is less robust. The country exported only $496,000 worth of strong spirits, a significant drop from the previous year. Kazakhstan and Russia are the main destinations for these exports. Beer exports also saw a decline, with Kazakhstan and China as the primary buyers. However, a new export market for grape wine has emerged, with shipments to Kazakhstan and Mongolia totaling $185,700.
