Kyrgyzstan resident detained for growing 54 opium poppy plants

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have opened a criminal case against a resident of the Toktogul district in the Jalal-Abad region for the illegal cultivation of narcotic-containing plants. The action followed operational information received by local police regarding the suspect's alleged illegal cultivation and storage of narcotics.

During an investigation, officers searched the suspect's property and discovered 54 opium poppy plants, which had been illegally cultivated. The total weight of these plants was recorded at 4.12 kilograms. In addition to the plants, 340 grams of a dark brown substance, suspected to be a narcotic, were also seized.

Following preliminary examinations, the case was escalated. It has been reclassified under Part 2 of Article 288 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan, which pertains to the illegal cultivation of plants containing narcotic substances on a particularly large scale. The suspect, identified only as M.E.R., has been detained.

A court has ordered two months of pre-trial detention for the suspect as the investigation continues. The incident highlights ongoing efforts by Kyrgyz authorities to combat drug cultivation and trafficking within the region.
