Kyrgyzstan warns of major traffic jams on Issyk-Kul highway as tourists return

Drivers heading to and from the popular Issyk-Kul lake region in Kyrgyzstan should prepare for substantial traffic delays today. The Department for Road Traffic Safety of the Chuy Oblast's Internal Affairs Directorate has issued a warning about a significant increase in vehicle flow on the Bishkek-Issyk-Kul highway.

The congestion is primarily anticipated in the direction of Bishkek, starting around 5:00 PM. This surge in traffic is attributed to the mass return of vacationers from the lake's coast after their holiday period. The scenic Issyk-Kul, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, is a major tourist destination for residents of Kyrgyzstan.

Adding to the potential travel disruptions, the department noted that road repair work is underway on various sections of the highway. These ongoing maintenance activities could further impede traffic, leading to extended travel times for those returning to the capital or other destinations.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and patience on the roads. The warning serves as a proactive measure to inform the public about the expected conditions, allowing them to plan their journeys accordingly and potentially avoid the peak hours of returning holiday traffic.
