Labor Ministry to inspect financial firms in Seoul for wage system abuse

South Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor is launching a targeted crackdown on the financial sector to combat the misuse of comprehensive wage systems. The ministry announced it will conduct special inspections in the financial districts of Jung-gu and Yeongdeungpo-gu in Seoul, areas known for a high concentration of financial companies and call centers.

This initiative is part of a broader series of inspections focused on "comprehensive wage and fixed overtime payment abuses." The ministry has been conducting these "relay inspections" across different industrial hubs since May. Previous checks targeted the Guro Digital Complex, known for IT firms, followed by Pangyo Techno Valley and the Changwon National Industrial Complex.

The ministry's action stems from numerous anonymous reports received through its "Comprehensive Wage and Fixed Overtime Abuse Anonymous Reporting Center." These reports detail instances where employees allegedly did not receive proper compensation for night or holiday work, or where wage details were unclear. Cases involving office workers frequently exceeding overtime limits, despite their work being easily trackable, have also been cited as typical violations.

"These are typical cases of suspected violations of the comprehensive wage system," a ministry official stated, underscoring the need for rigorous oversight. The ministry plans to continue operating the anonymous reporting center and conduct repeated inspections in areas where reports persist, demonstrating a commitment to eradicating illegal labor practices.

The focus on the financial sector highlights concerns that even industries with structured work environments might be exploiting loopholes in wage regulations. The ministry's proactive approach aims to ensure fair labor practices and protect workers' rights across various industries.
