Lagos Govt Bans Permanent Use of Dealer Number Plates

The Lagos State Government has firmly reiterated its ban on the permanent and everyday use of dealer number plates by motorists and vehicle dealers. Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, stated in a release that these plates are strictly for legally permitted, time-limited activities.

According to Ogunlola, the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 permits dealer plates for authorized test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection of vehicles, and the movement of unregistered vehicles. Such movements must be direct, from ports or authorized dealer premises to designated locations. Using them for private commuting, continuous operation on public roads, or on vehicles already sold is explicitly prohibited.

The enforcement of these regulations has led to the apprehension of 175 vehicles by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) for violating the rules governing dealer number plates. The recovered plates will be confiscated, and the vehicles will undergo further investigation. Ogunlola warned that vehicles found operating with unauthorized, fake, obscured, or improperly used registration numbers will face strict enforcement actions, including impoundment and prosecution under relevant traffic laws.

The government urges all vehicle dealers and motorists to adhere strictly to the regulations concerning dealer number plates. This measure aims to enhance accountability, ensure accurate vehicle identification, and improve overall safety on Lagos roads.
