Lagos Govt Intervenes After Alleged Threats Against Widow, Arrests Suspect

The Lagos State Government has stepped in to protect a 28-year-old widow who allegedly faced threats, intimidation, and attempts to seize her late husband's property just eight days after his death. The government's intervention came after a viral video surfaced, showing a man identified as the widow's father-in-law padlocking the property's gate, effectively barring her entry.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), led by Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, who is now in police custody pending further investigation. The viral video, shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, identified the man padlocking the gate as the widow's father-in-law. Gwamnishu accused the deceased's family of trying to take over the property while neglecting the widow and her two children.

According to Gwamnishu's allegations, the widow's husband died on July 20, 2026. Following his death, members of his family reportedly moved into the deceased's residence. The widow claimed that her father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and his wife directed her to move her belongings and those of her children into a single room. Furthermore, some of the deceased's possessions were allegedly distributed among family members, with plans reportedly in motion to sell his vehicle. Gwamnishu expressed concern for the widow's safety and that of her children, urging government intervention.

Responding to the situation, the DSVA confirmed that the widow had reported allegations of threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation following her husband's passing. The agency established contact with the survivor, who detailed the threats and assaults she allegedly endured. She also informed the DSVA that the matter had been reported to the Owutu Police Division. Preliminary feedback from the police confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
