Lagos resumes monthly sanitation Saturday, restricts movement

Lagos, our vibrant megacity, is taking a decisive step towards a cleaner and healthier environment with the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Commencing on April 25, this initiative, held on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 am to 8:30 am, signifies our collective commitment to reclaiming the cleanliness of our communities. During these two hours, movement will be controlled across the state, empowering residents to dedicate time to meticulously cleaning their homes, immediate surroundings, and drainage frontages.

The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month between the hours of 6:30 am and 8:30 am. During this period, there will be controlled movement across the state to allow residents to carry out thorough cleaning of their homes, surroundings and drainage frontages.

This exercise, returning after a hiatus since November 2016, is not merely about aesthetics; it is about public health, civic responsibility, and fostering a sense of ownership over our environment. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has emphasized that compliance will be strictly monitored by a joint task force comprising various agencies, including LASEPA, KAI, and LAWMA. Defaulters will face sanctions under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. This firm stance is necessary to instill discipline and ensure the program's effectiveness.

There will be rewards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and the cleanest street as part of efforts to encourage healthy competition and community participation.

To further encourage participation and healthy competition, the Lagos State Government will introduce incentives, recognizing the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and streets. We urge all residents to embrace this exercise, take ownership, and join hands with the government in building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos. Our collective effort is paramount to achieving the vision of a megacity that is not only economically vibrant but also environmentally pristine. LAWMA will be on hand to evacuate the waste generated during the exercise, ensuring a comprehensive clean-up.
