Lagos seeks EFCC partnership to combat real estate fraud

Lagos State is intensifying its efforts to combat fraudulent practices within the real estate sector by seeking a closer partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Officials from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) recently met with the EFCC's Lagos Zonal Directorate to bolster existing cooperation.

The collaboration aims to enhance the identification, investigation, and prosecution of individuals and organizations involved in real estate fraud. This includes crimes such as property flipping, document forgery, and other related offenses. Both agencies recognize that stronger collaboration is crucial for improving enforcement and safeguarding the public from deceptive activities in the property market.

Abdulhafis Toriola, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, stated that the engagement was designed to deepen cooperation. Adebayo Adeniyi, Assistant Commander at the EFCC, noted that real estate complaints constitute a significant portion of the commission's caseload, underscoring the necessity of sustained inter-agency efforts.

The EFCC and LASRERA have committed to combining LASRERA's regulatory oversight with the EFCC's investigative and prosecutorial powers. This joint approach seeks to sanitize the real estate industry and ensure that fraudulent agents and developers are brought to justice. Toriola reaffirmed LASRERA's dedication to working with relevant government bodies to regulate the sector, improve monitoring, and promote transparency throughout Lagos State.
