Lake Techirghiol Shrinks Dramatically Amid Prolonged Drought

Lake Techirghiol, a prominent natural landmark on Romania's coast, presents a stark image of environmental distress as prolonged drought and intense summer heat take their toll. The water level has plummeted, revealing vast expanses of mudflats and land that typically lie beneath the surface, painting a desolate picture for visitors and locals alike.

This dramatic environmental shift is attributed to the ongoing heatwave and a deficit in rainfall, which have accelerated evaporation rates and hindered the lake's natural replenishment. While the current appearance is unusual for tourists, local authorities emphasize that such fluctuations are part of the lake's natural cycle, influenced by alternating periods of drought and heavy precipitation.

Specialists warn that if high temperatures and the lack of rain persist, the exposed shorelines could expand further in the coming period. However, experts from the Techirghiol Balnear Sanatorium reassure the public that the lake's famous therapeutic mud has not lost its specific properties. This sapropelic mud, often called the "black gold" of the Romanian coast, has been utilized for decades in balneological treatments.

The therapeutic mud is recommended for patients with rheumatic, neurological, dermatological, and gynecological conditions, as well as for treating post-traumatic sequelae and peripheral vascular issues. Its healing properties have long established the Techirghiol resort as a key center for balneological rehabilitation in Romania, a status now tested by the severe weather conditions.
