Lamia Wildfire Under Control After Helicopter Douses Flames

Firefighters have successfully brought under control a wildfire that erupted Saturday afternoon in low forest vegetation in the Kamilyovrisi area of Lamia. The blaze began around 3 p.m. near a Roma settlement, quickly spreading through the dry vegetation and crossing the old Lamia-Larissa national road.

Strong firefighting forces were deployed to the scene, comprising 35 firefighters, a ground team from the 4th EMAK (Special Unit for Disaster Response), and 11 vehicles. The contribution of PZL aircraft and a helicopter was crucial in extinguishing the fire, with the helicopter continuing water drops over the burnt areas until 7 p.m. The fire threatened the Holy Monastery of Agia Magdelini, but it did not reach the site, though it was preemptively evacuated by the Fire Service.

Regional authorities from Central Greece also participated in the operation with two water trucks and a bulldozer, assisting in the containment efforts. Firefighting forces remain stationed in the area to guard against any potential rekindling of the flames. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of wildfire management during dry periods.
