Land Fires Burn Nearly 400 Hectares in Indonesia's Papua Tengah; Some Flames Uncontrolled

Extensive land and forest fires are raging across seven districts in Nabire, Papua Tengah, Indonesia, impacting an estimated 396.13 hectares since they began on July 18. The fires have affected four families, highlighting the immediate human cost of the environmental disaster.

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) attributes the blazes to a combination of factors, including intensely hot weather, strong winds, and abundant dry brush and grass. Despite ongoing efforts, some fire hotspots remain active as of August 23, particularly in areas that are difficult for ground crews to access.

The fires were triggered by hot weather conditions, strong winds, and a lot of dry bushes and weeds. Based on data collected by the BPBD of Nabire Regency, around 396.13 hectares of land have burned and four families have been affected.

To address the escalating situation, local authorities are seeking further assistance. They have identified the need for aerial support, specifically water bombing operations, and additional firefighting equipment to tackle the inaccessible zones. This request underscores the severity of the fires and the challenges faced in containing them.

Recent data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed a significant increase in hotspots across Papua Tengah between August 10-22, with Nabire being the most severely affected region. BMKG Nabire head Husain Kamadi explained that extremely low rainfall in the past three weeks has left vegetation highly susceptible to ignition, exacerbating the fire risk.

The current rainfall is very low. Water supply, especially in the Nabire Regency area, is very low, so the potential for fire is very easy to occur when triggered by fire.
