Landfill Fire Reignites in Bačka Palanka, Third Incident in Weeks

A landfill fire has once again erupted in Bačka Palanka, Serbia, forcing numerous firefighting crews into a desperate battle to regain control. The blaze, which reignited early Wednesday morning, has drawn in units from Bačka Palanka, Silbaš, Despotovo, and Pivnice. This is the third time in just a few weeks that the landfill has caught fire. The previous incident required firefighters to work for more than a week to extinguish the flames.

The recurring fires have drawn sharp criticism from a local citizens' group, "Bačka Palanka uz studente" (Bačka Palanka with Students). The group asserts that the repeated blazes are a direct consequence of the local authorities' "incompetent management." They argue that persistent landfill fires are not merely an unsightly problem but pose a serious threat to public health and the environment. "When the same problem keeps happening, it's no longer an unfortunate accident, but a picture of incompetent management," the group stated.

Landfill fires are particularly dangerous due to the release of numerous harmful particles into the air. The repeated incidents at the Bačka Palanka landfill, including fires in May and now this latest one, underscore a persistent environmental and health concern for the region.
