Latvia Restores Power to Over 100,000 Households After Storm Damage

Repair efforts are underway across Latvia after a severe storm caused widespread power outages, affecting an estimated 167,000 customers. While electricity has been restored to over 100,000 households, the work to fully reinstate power is proceeding in an intensified mode.

"Sadales tīkls," the Latvian electricity distribution network operator, has mobilized 206 of its own crews to address the damage. To expedite the restoration process, the company has also enlisted the assistance of seven crews from Estonia's "Elektrilevi," the distribution system operator there. The storm's impact has caused extensive damage to both the high-voltage transmission network operated by AS "Augstsprieguma tīkls" and the lower-voltage distribution network managed by "Sadales tīkls."

Before "Sadales tīkls" can restore power to the medium-voltage network, damage to the main transmission lines must be repaired. Consequently, some repair crews are collaborating with colleagues from AS "Augstsprieguma tīkls" to address these primary line damages. The most severely affected regions include Bauska, Krāslava, Madona, Rēzekne, and Jelgava.

Given the scale of the storm's destruction, particularly in forested areas, "Sadales tīkls" warns that restoring electricity to some customers may take several days. The company urges the public to report any high-risk situations, such as downed power lines, by calling their 24-hour hotline or the State Fire and Rescue Service. Residents can also track the current situation and report damages via the "Sadales tīkls" website, where a digital outage map is available.
