Latvia Turns Back 43 Illegal Migrants at Belarus Border

Latvia's border service prevented 43 illegal migrants from entering the country on Friday, as the nation continues to grapple with a significant influx. This action comes as Polish officials reported no similar incidents on Thursday. The situation highlights ongoing challenges at the EU's eastern border.

Last year, Lithuanian authorities stopped over 1,600 individuals from crossing into the country from Belarus in unauthorized areas. This year, the number has reached 1,155. In total, since the migration crisis orchestrated by Belarus began, Lithuania has denied entry to around 25,600 illegal migrants. These figures underscore the persistent pressure on border security in the region.

Migrants began to surge into Eastern European Union countries in 2021. Western nations have attributed this crisis to the regime in Minsk, accusing it of weaponizing migration flows. The continued attempts at illegal entry demonstrate the complex geopolitical dynamics at play and the strain on border control measures.
