Lithuanian police to increase traffic checks during holiday weekend

Lithuanian police are stepping up traffic enforcement nationwide for the upcoming holiday weekend, warning drivers to remain vigilant. From August 16-18, national controls will target drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Additionally, August 14-15 will see increased checks on cyclists and users of electric micro-mobility devices.

Police spokesperson Jorūnė Liutkienė highlighted that regional police departments may implement further measures based on local traffic accident statistics and the traditional Žolinė holiday events. She expressed concern over the summer's road safety, noting a near doubling of fatalities in a short period compared to last year. While the total number of road deaths this year (73) is slightly lower than last year (77), the summer months have seen a sharp increase, with 42 deaths by August 14, up from 27 during the same period last year.

She identified distraction, particularly mobile phone use, as a major threat, emphasizing that even a brief glance at a screen can be fatal. Drivers are reminded to stay sober, focused, and dedicate their full attention to driving.

Liutkienė also addressed the persistent issue of drunk driving, especially during long weekends and holidays. While police presence will increase, she stressed the importance of public education and community involvement. "Let us each prevent someone from driving drunk, stop them, reprimand them. The safety of all of us as road users depends on the responsible behavior of each of us, not just drivers," she urged.

Official statistics reveal that 396,322 traffic violations were recorded in the first half of this year.
