Latvian labor inspectorate probes school groundskeeper's death

Latvia's State Labour Inspectorate (VDI) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a groundskeeper at Ogres Kalna Primary School. Inspectorate officials promptly visited the scene upon receiving information to gather testimonies and ascertain all details relevant to classifying the incident as a workplace accident. "The inspectorate emphasizes that any conclusions regarding the causes of the incident and potential violations of labor protection requirements can only be made after the inspection is completed and all circumstances are thoroughly evaluated," a statement read. The investigation aims to determine if workplace safety regulations were breached. The employee, who had been hired only five days earlier to cover for an absent colleague, was found without signs of life during a break. Emergency medical services were called, and resuscitation efforts were initiated, but they were unsuccessful. The Ogre municipality stated that, based on available information, the employee died during a rest period and the incident is not believed to be connected to work duties or safety violations. The municipality had informed the VDI about the event. State police representative Līga Dziļuma reported that there is currently no evidence of criminal activity. The VDI's findings will be crucial in officially determining the nature of the death.
