Latvian Parasport Faces Leadership Dispute Amid Funding Concerns

A dispute is brewing within Latvia's Paralympic movement, centering on the leadership of the Latvian Paralympic Committee (LPK) and the future direction of parasport in the country. At the heart of the conflict is the exclusion of the Children and Youth Parasport Association (BJPSA) from the LPK earlier this year.

The BJPSA, which had been an integral part of the LPK system and recognized for its work in developing parasport for young people across various regions, claims its expulsion was handled improperly. According to the association, accusations were not adequately discussed, were unfounded, and involved documents potentially backdated. They assert they were denied a proper opportunity to respond to these claims.

Despite the LPK's decision, the BJPSA continues its operations, providing training, organizing events, and participating in competitions. This continuity is attributed to the dedication of volunteers, sponsors, and partners. The association highlights its ability to fulfill its plans even without the state funding that was previously channeled through the LPK.

Specifically, the BJPSA is seeking 15,000 euros in state funding that had been approved for the development of children's and youth parasport. This amount, though seemingly small in the broader context of sports funding, is crucial for the association's continued work. The exclusion from the LPK has made this previously allocated funding inaccessible, posing a challenge to their operations.
