Lavitola confesses to orchestrating attack on journalist Ranucci, claims it was for protection

Businessman Valter Lavitola has confessed to orchestrating an attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, a source and friend, stating his intention was to protect the reporter.

Lavitola, whose defense strategy has shifted from silence to admission, claimed the attack was planned to safeguard Ranucci, noting that his security detail was increased from two to eight agents following the incident. This admission comes after a night in prison and may be an attempt to mitigate his pre-trial detention.

Investigators have confirmed Lavitola's role as the mastermind behind the plot and the recruitment of four individuals from Avellino to execute the attack. Gomes Clesio Tavares, described as Lavitola's confidant, allegedly hired the four operatives and commissioned the assault.

Despite the confession, significant questions remain, particularly regarding Lavitola's true motive. While he claims the attack aimed to enhance Ranucci's security, investigators are exploring other possibilities, including whether the attack was intended to boost Ranucci's political career. Prosecutors believe Ranucci was unaware of any such plot.

Lavitola has a history of alleged involvement in political maneuvering, including accusations of facilitating the sale of senators to destabilize Romano Prodi's government in 2008 and orchestrating a media campaign against Gianfranco Fini. His lawyer, Sergio Cola, has offered a "no comment" response to reporters regarding Ranucci's potential involvement.
