Spray and kicks against a tourist wearing a kippah, 31-year-old reported in Rome

Carabinieri in Rome have reported a 31-year-old Algerian national for alleged assault and inciting discrimination. The accusations stem from two separate incidents involving a 22-year-old French tourist of Jewish faith who was wearing a kippah.

The tourist reported being targeted twice in central Rome. The first incident occurred on August 7, around 8 p.m. in Piazza Cairoli, where he claims the 31-year-old sprayed him in the face with an irritant. The following day, around 8:15 p.m. near Largo di Torre Argentina, the victim alleges he was attacked and kicked by a group of four individuals, including the 31-year-old.

During both alleged assaults, the attackers reportedly shouted the slogan "free Palestine." Investigators are working to identify the other individuals involved in the group attack. The suspect, who is reportedly homeless and has a prior record, may have had accomplices.

Victor Fadlun, president of the Jewish Community of Rome, condemned the incidents, stating, "Even on the streets of Rome, unfortunately, the manhunt, the hunt for Jews, has arrived." He expressed hope that Italians would not witness growing public indifference. Senators from the Fratelli d'Italia party, members of the Segre Commission against discrimination and antisemitism, also issued a statement calling the attack "ignoble" and emphasizing that violence and hatred, particularly antisemitism, must be unequivocally condemned.
